Mt. Daruma Viewpoint
VIEWPOINT
Mt. Daruma viewpoint is a lesser known viewpoint of Mt. Fuji overlooking the Suruga Bay. It is completely free and has a restaurant near the viewpoint so if you have the time I definitely recommend visiting here. It is also open 24 hours so feel free to visit during the daylight or even for some stargazing.
At the 1939 International Exposition in New York, the Japanese government exhibited a wide photograph taken from this viewpoint and it immediately became an international success.
The city has a live camera installed which you can access at http://livecamera.city.izu.shizuoka.jp.e.jj.hp.transer.com/.
Review
This is one of my favourite viewpoints in the whole of the peninsula. Depending on the weather, you can see many different views of Mt. Fuji and the surrounding area. The mountain drive is really nice, although it has quite a few bends on the way up (on either side). Niji no Sato is also nearby so if you’re in the area feel free to stop by.
I haven’t yet eaten at the restaurant, however I often visit the viewpoint when my friends visit. There is also a small gift shop inside the building. I try to visit during different times of day, however sunset during winter is definitely the prettiest. During summer there is a lot of foliage on the surrounding mountains and the sea glistens an amazing aquamarine, however due to the humidity and weather it can be quite difficult to get a day in which you can see Mt. Fuji. Winter isn’t too cold here and it doesn’t snow much so if you’re visiting in winter I definitely recommend visiting here. Winter sunsets in Japan envelope the area in purple and pink so it’s a must-see if you ever visit.
