Jogasaki Coast

VIEWPOINT

With good transport links, the East coast of Izu is much more popular and well-known. Jogasaki Coast is not an exception. The saw-toothed coastline extending for 9km is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the peninsula. It is part of both the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and also the Izu Peninsula Geo Park.

In late March/early April, the road leading to Jogasaki Coast is filled with cherry blossom trees. From May to July, hydrangea flowers line the road. There is also a hiking trail along the coastline.

Buses run infrequently (one per hour) to the coast and also aren’t taken from the nearby station so walking the 20 minutes, taking a taxi or driving is my recommended ways of getting here. There is a car park with a base rate of ¥500 after the first 15 minutes.

English area maps are available at Jogasaki Kaigan Station.

Review

Jogasaki Coast is one of the areas of Izu that people always bring up if you mention the peninsula. It’s world-famous, with good transport links to most of the attractions so I see why it’s so attractive to the tourists.

I always wondered if it would be a place that was over-hyped but I was pleasantly surprised. Smaller than I thought, the area is a good place to walk and look at the coastline. I think the car park fee is a bit steep, especially if you’re only going there for a short time, but if you can stretch out your visit for a few hours I think it’s worth it. Really it should be a price per half hour, with a capped limit.

I wish I had more time to actually do the whole hiking course when I went but we got there not long before sunset so time was limited. I’ll definitely be going back to explore more of the area.

The coastline itself is very pretty and there are a lot of small things to see so it’s definitely going to be somewhere that I take my friends to when they come to Japan. I highly recommend you check it out if you have the time.

RECOMMENDED ROUTE:

Jogasaki Coast is easiest to get to by car however you are able to take the train to Izu Kogen Station and then a bus bound for Kaiyo Koen (10 minutes, ¥250 one way). Due to the infrequency of the buses I recommend walking 20 minutes to the coastline from Jogasaki Kaigan Station.
