Hashidate Suspension Bridge

Ito is an area full of amazing viewpoints and Tsushima Falls is no exception. With views of the eastern coastline overlooking the ocean, it’s definitely worth making the journey down. The bridge has an amazing view of the ocean/coastline and if you’re lucky then you might also be able to see people scaling the rock below you.

There is a free car park available, however there aren’t many spaces. Search for 橋立観光駐車場 in Google Maps to find it.

Review

I’ve always heard that the Ito coastline was pretty but I rarely drive over this side of the peninsula. I definitely wasn’t disappointed by the view. The normal car park was full so we parked at the station and walked down to the waterfall. There are signposts in English and it’ll take you down a path along the river. At the end turn right and follow until you get to the bridge.

The bridge has a pretty view but don’t expect to stay here for too long. We took a few pictures and there weren’t that many people around so I’m not sure how well known it is. It also seems like you can rock climb in this area but I’m unsure how to actually do that. If you’re lucky then you can watch other people do it.

RECOMMENDED ROUTE:

Parking can be a bit of a nightmare to find. I recommend taking the train from Atami to Izu-Kogen Station and then walk to the waterfall from there. There is a car park for here, however there aren’t many spaces. The station also provides parking for a fee.

Kaede Bridge

Kaede Bridge crossed the Katsura River, which flows through the centre of Shuzenji hot spring town. It is also known as “maple bridge” or “snuggle bridge”. Kaede Bridge is one of five bridges built over this river and is said that if you make a wish while crossing all five bridges then your love will come true. Each bridge also has its own symbol so make sure to look out for this somewhere on the bridge!

I recommend visiting here during autumn leaf season as the fall colours make for such a picturesque sight!

Review

This bridge is a very popular tourist spot so it will most likely be full of people when you visit. I don’t recommend visiting the bridge by itself, but instead bundle it along with the other sights that Shuzenji hot spring town has to offer!

Make sure to make a wish while crossing as it is said that if you cross all five bridges while making a wish then your love will come true. If you come while the maple leaves are in full bloom then you will have an exquisite sight while making your wish. The red bridge mixed in with the red maple leaves is truly a sight to behold!

RECOMMENDED ROUTE:

Kaede bridge is easiest to get to by public transport, however there are paid car parks in Shuzenji available to use. Take the train from Mishima to Shuzenji on the Izu Hakone Tetsudo Line. Switch to the bus bound for Shuzenji Onsen (修善寺温泉).

Kadowakitsuri Bridge

With good transport links, the East coast of Izu is much more popular and well-known. Jogasaki Coast is not an exception. The saw-toothed coastline extending for 9km is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the peninsula. It is part of both the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and also the Izu Peninsula Geo Park.

Kadowakitsuri Bridge is a famous Instagrammable spot that can’t be missed if you’re in the area. Be warned that due to its popularity, you may have to wait to get good shots on the bridge.

Buses run infrequently (one per hour) to the coast and also aren’t taken from the nearby station so walking the 20 minutes, taking a taxi or driving is my recommended ways of getting here. There is a car park with a base rate of ￥500 after the first 15 minutes.

Review

This bridge is in a great location, however I was expecting it to be a little longer. Located very close to the car park, it’s an easy walking distance and also seems to be disabled friendly! We visited during the pandemic so tourists were at a minimum, however I do see this bridge being super popular when it’s safe enough to travel again.

If you have the time then definitely visit the other attractions in the area. It’s worth coming for the attractions as a whole but the bridge itself is very short (not including the waiting time for photos) so it’s better to pack more into your schedule.

RECOMMENDED ROUTE:

Kadowakitsuri Bridge is easiest to get to by car however you are able to take the train to Izu Kogen Station and then a bus bound for Kaiyo Koen (10 minutes, ￥250 one way). Due to the infrequency of the buses I recommend walking 20 minutes to the coastline from Jogasaki Kaigan Station.
