Tokko no Yu

HOT SPRING

Tokko no Yu is said to be the oldest hot spring in all of Izu. It is said that Kobo Daishi discovered a young boy washing his father’s ailing body in the Katsuragawa River in 807 when he visited the area. He was so overcome by this devotion that he struck a rock in the river with a Buddhist implement and a hot spring sprung forth. There are signs not to enter this water, however nearby there are foot springs for you to enjoy and numerous other hot springs in the surrounding area.

Shuzenji hot springs are famous so if you visit then make sure to enjoy the soothing hot water after a day of exploring. Hot springs have numerous health benefits, although please ensure to double check the hot spring etiquette before you go.

If you are in the area then feel free to drop by but I maybe wouldn’t make the effort just to visit this. Bundle the visit in with visiting the numerous other attractions Shuzenji has to offer. Tokko no Yu is very important to the town so they hold a festival every year celebrating the origins of the hot spring. They also have many signs advising not to enter the water, although you probably will see people breaking this.

There are signs nearby in English which explain a little about the area. I recommend you relax your weary feet in the foot springs nearby (which uses the same hot spring water). Make sure to bring something to dry your feet afterwards! It can get a little busy so you may have to wait for your turn in the water.

RECOMMENDED ROUTE:

Parking can be very expensive in Shuzenji so I recommend that you take the train to Shuzenji Station and then either take the bus to Shuzenji Onsen Town or take a taxi.
