Suruga Bay Boat Tour

BOAT TOUR

Numazu has great access to the sea, as well as many great views of Mt. Fuji. If you are in Numazu with time to spare I recommend going on the Suruga Bay Boat Tour (Numazu Pleasure Boat). Circling the Numazu City side of the bay, within 30 minutes you can get great views of Mt. Fuji (on a clear day) and west coast of the surrounding Izu Peninsula.

During summer they add extra times, as well as a 70 minute session, instead of the usual 30 minutes. In winter I recommend going on the last boat tour. If you’re lucky you can see the “golden hour” rays as you come back in to land.

Review

As with most of the Japanese countryside, trying to book the tickets isn’t very English friendly but if you are able to point to exactly what you want and use simple English you can definitely get by. After purchasing the tickets, it was a very short walk to the boat and a little bit of a wait until we set off. Lucky for us, there weren’t many other people on the day I decided to go, probably because it was mid-winter and the sea-breeze can be very chilly.

I definitely recommend trying to get a good seat/viewing spot as soon as you get on the boat. Japanese people are no strangers to cameras so depending on how busy it is, it might be a struggle trying to find a good spot to watch the sea roll by. The outer deck can get very chilly while on the boat ride so make sure to bring warm enough clothes. We stood outside, beside the railing in the hope to get the best views of the surrounding peninsula. The 30 minute ride went by very quick and we happened to go as the sun was starting to set (the last boat of the day) so we saw an amazing golden glow on our return to land.

If you’re interested, there is someone inside the boat who sells snacks for you to feed the seagulls. Be warned, the seagulls are not shy and will come straight up to you, may even flock, if they see you have any snacks for them.
